The Box of Activities for School Readiness

The Box of Activities for School Readiness

We are teachers who trained together at Cambridge University and have over 40 years' teaching experience between us. In recent years we have noticed more children were starting school confident with touchscreen technology but less confident with their fine motor skills.

Children were struggling with everyday tasks such as: buttoning their clothes, using a knife and fork, and also more formal skills needed for school, for example: holding a pencil and scissor skills. Not only can this have a negative impact on their learning, but it can also affect children’s self-esteem (SEMH).

A recent report from The World Health Organisation (WHO) said:

"Children under five must spend less time sitting watching screens, or restrained in prams and seats, get better quality sleep and have more time for active play if they are to grow up healthy, according to new guidelines issued by WHO."
